Problem with restoring with ontape -r
Posted in 2003

Situation:
In order to install a testsystem a backup has been created of our
Informix database with ontape -s -L 0. The tape to which the data is
backuped has a potential of about 130 GB but the TAPESIZE was limited
to 80 GB.
Our total database however is about 180 GB and the backup, as result,
took 3 tapes. So far so good. Now we want to restore these tapes to
our test system.
I used ontape -r which seemed to work fine. With onstat -Dr I could
monitor the progress of the restore.
Problem:
The 80 GB of data of the first tape has been restored. The "onstat
-Dr" command showes no further action from the restore. However the
system doesn't ask for tape nr. 2. I don't know wether or not the
process is still active or sort of sleeping. The online.log last entry
is 20 hours ago. What to do? Should I just insert tape nr. 2 and hope
the process continues ?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Danny
Depending on the OS you can use truss or similar to see what the
process is doing/not doing. Are the tape parameters the same for
both systems, is the tape still running, has the job been backgrounded
and then brought forward and you've missed the message to change the
tape

It looks like system is waiting for tape change. If using unix, use fg to
bring job in foreground. You might get some prompt for tape change. I would
not run this in background.
