How much memory?
Posted in 1999
Hi, We have a data warehouse of about 50 Gbytes, which is growing at a steady rate. We've just had a disk upgrade and now have capacity for about 200 Gbytes of database (the cabinet would take nearly 1TByte). We're running on a HP K460 server, with 4 cpu's. When the server was delivered, it had 2 cpu's and 256 MBytes of memory. When we bought 2 more cpu's we doubled the memory, to 516 MBytes. Apart from month ends, when we rebuild the database, the server is dedicated to running IDS (version 7.3UC7). From time to time, I see postings from people with simliar servers doing similar jobs. One common thread I see, is that most people seem to have much more memory on their servers. One example recently quoted 3 cpus and 3 GBytes of memory (in a HP K-series server). Memory is pretty expensive, so I'd be interested if anyone has experience/examples of performance improvements gained from increasing the amount of memory in a similar server. Thanks in advance, Martyn Hodgson martyn.hodgson@zurich.co.uk
