HDR primary state off
Posted in 2017
After patching the DR server and restoring the secondary (Informix 11.70 on HP-UX), HDR wouldn't restart: onstat showed the secondary's state as 'on' but the primary's as 'off'. The primary's online.log showed DR_ERR -2, 'Failure recovery error (2)', 'Cannot connect to secondary' and a broken network connection (-25582), while the secondary logged 'Received connection request from remote server when DR is not Off'. Suggestions were to verify the onmode -d primary/secondary syntax, check onstat -l current logs, and reset one side to standard mode before re-pairing (possibly re-initialising HDR). The thread records no confirmation that this worked.

Good evening,
Over the weekend had to switch off replication as patches were being applied
on the DR server. Then on Monday morning ran restore on secondary server.
after running the restore I switch replication on for both primary and
secondary servers, using command onmode -d primary alias name for primary and
secondary. The issue at hand is that replication is still OFF on primary and
ON secondary. How can put the state of primary to ON again as nothing is being
replicated. But the primary server shows that it is a primary server. It is
just the state of the replication that is off.
Regards
Zanele
Your onmode -d commands were incorrect. Should be:
On primary:
onmode -d primary <secondary name>
On secondary
onmode -d secondary <primary name>

Good Morning,
Thank you for your response.
But that exactly what I did.
On primary:

Hi,
Did you follow the steps at
https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/en/SSGU8G_11.70.0/com.ibm.admin.doc/
ids_admin_0931.htm and get all the expected messages?
If you check onstat -l on each server which log is marked current with a "C"
on each server?
I have not tried it but at this point you could try setting the seconday back
to standard and then reconnect everything
- onmode -d standard on the secondary
- onmode -d primary sec_name on the primary
- onmode -d secondary prim_name on the secondary
but you may have to re-initialise HDR again.
Regards,
David

Try putting the primary into standard mode then back to primary mode. Once
you have done that try making the secondary a secondary again.
If that doesn't work post the lines from both online.log files from the
time you try that and also post the output from onstat -l from both servers.

Probably the patch you applied has caused a communication issue between the
primary and secondary.
I would test it by: On secondary -- dbaccess sysmaster@primary
(and perhaps, vice versa)
If this doesn't work, then fix your network configurations. As far as for
Informix, you seem to do it correctly.
Let's go GreenThis email contains 100% recycled electrons.

Zanele:
Are you certain you can connect from one IDS instance to the other and
authenticate?
i.e. Can you run a DBACCESS session on the primary and query the secondary
server and vice versa?

Hi Guys,
Thank very much for your help. State for HDR for both environment is now
ON.
What I did is. I did a restore again then I stated secondary database with
oninit -D command (to start it without replication) .
Then I executed onclean -ky (clean the segments)
Then oninit -PHY command
Then run the command below.
On primary:
onmode -d primary <secondary name>
On secondary
onmode -d secondary <primary name>

For setting up an HDR or RSS secondary server, you'd start with a=20
'physical restore', as opposed to 'a restore' which would be a combined=20
physical and logical restore.
Doing so you'd already land in the state that would allow 'onmode -d=20
secondary', and all of those oninit -D, onclean -ky and oninit -PHY=20
would not be required.
NOT doing so, that is not restricting the restore to a physical only=20
restore, would end in a 'quiescent mode' server state, with at least one=20
checkpoint being conducted independently from opposite (primary) side -=20
which is fatal for HDR. As soon as an (existing or to-be) HDR secondary=20
gets a chance for writing its own, independent checkpoint, you'd have what =
we call split-brain, and the two would not be able to synchronize any=20
more.

Andreas
