IIUG / IDUG 2007 - North America: Top Ten Reasons To Attend!
Posted in 2007
Despite the subject line, this thread contains no Informix technical content. A poster responded to an IIUG/IDUG 2007 conference promotion with a complaint about the cost of US visas and hostile treatment of UK visitors at US immigration post-9/11. The replies descended into a political flame war about the Bush administration, religion, elections and Europe-vs-US sniping, with one participant asking that politics be taken elsewhere. No technical problem is raised and no resolution is recorded.

Here, courtesy of Viz Top Tips, is one top reason *not* to go: US GOVERNMENT Repay the millions of pounds, all the lives of British soldiers and the embarrassment of everyone supporting the US invasion of Iraq by increasing the cost of paperwork needed for UK citizens to visit your country for 4 days to $600, then make them wait half a day at immigration and treat them like shit. Underline the irony of the situation by repeatedly banging on about how the USA has no truer friend than Great Britain.
Where are the $600 coming from? You need a visa now?! Anyway, I would probably not define the Colony as "truer friend". > -----Original Message----- > From: informix-list-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:informix-list- > bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of Captain Pedantic > Sent: mercredi 11 avril 2007 22:57 > To: informix-list@iiug.org > Subject: IIUG / IDUG 2007 - North America: Top Ten Reasons To Attend! > > Here, courtesy of Viz Top Tips, is one top reason *not* to go: > > US GOVERNMENT Repay the millions of pounds, all the lives of British > soldiers and the embarrassment of everyone supporting the US invasion > of > Iraq by increasing the cost of paperwork needed for UK citizens to > visit > your country for 4 days to $600, then make them wait half a day at > immigration and treat them like shit. Kind of shallow and stupid don't you think? The American public are not all ignorant peasants who don't understand what's going on. We don't like it any more than you do. The US Govt isn't treating you any worse than they already treat their own citizens. We do have one saving grace, term limits, which will ultimately get rid of king George and all his ultra-right-wing religious retards and other paranoid sexually repressed control freaks who have fucked up our country for the past 7 years. Be patient, we'll have a change next year hopefully for the better. In the meantime, worry about your own back yard, and get rid of the religious morons from the middle east that are spreading hate everywhere in Europe. I think I specified the religious morons that are spreading hate. ;-) Different from the religious morons that are running our government. I was making a narrower point about how, post 9/11, the United States Immigration Service has become even more hostile, contemptuous and unwelcoming ... even to citizens of countries such as the UK that have paid such a heavy price for their governments' support on the "War on Terror". Don't take my word for it though. http://www.ttnworldwide.com/bkArticlesF.asp?Article=6307&Section=833&IssueID=272

Not all, but a very large percentage. Heck, the most popular show now is "are you smarter than a fifth grader?" (or something like that) and most contestants obviously are not. But, it is the same in most countries - most of the people are ignorant. > We don't like it any more than you do. "We" is not most of the American population. Arguably, most of the voters in the last election. > The US Govt isn't treating you any worse than they already treat their own citizens. With the exception of the wealthy Republican population. How many times were Al Gore and Ted Kennedy held for extra screenings? > We do have one saving grace, term limits, > which will ultimately get rid of king George and all his ultra-right-wing > religious retards and other paranoid sexually repressed control freaks who > have fucked up our country for the past 7 years. But in 2003, where Bush received over three million votes than Kerry. Don't bet that the American population will not vote for a different "ultra-right-wing religious retard". Besides, democrats can screw things up just as bad as Republicans. > In the meantime, worry about your own back yard, and get rid of the religious morons from the middle east that > are spreading hate everywhere in Europe. Are you referring to Muslims, Christians (Skin-heads), both or others? And after this rant, could you please discuss politics somewhere else? Zachi
