FW: SQL -406 Memory allocation failed.
Posted in 2009
Topics: Backup & Restore, Platform-Specific Issues
We've recently started receiving this error during and onbar restore.
It was working fine in the past.
IDS:
BM Informix Dynamic Server Version 9.40.HC6X1 -- On-Line -- Up 108
days 15:01:51 -- 526420 Kbytes
OS:
HP-UX B.11.11 U 9000/800
The restore abended with a similar error as during the Disaster test:
2009-10-13 12:00:44 18439 18436 Out of memory
2009-10-13 12:00:44 18439 18436 An attempt to add 534505 to a linked
list failed with error 7
2009-10-13 12:00:44 18439 18436 SQL -406 Memory allocation
failed.
2009-10-13 12:00:44 18439 18436 /opt/informix/ifx940.hc6x1/bin/onbar_d
complete, returning 158 (0x9e)

Well the "Out of memory" message indicates a failure of a malloc. You might
try turning on bar debug to like 3 or 5 and seeing what more details you can
get. The "534505" is likely the object name it was trying to insert onto a
list of objects, not sure if that is a logical log id or what else it might
be. If malloc is failing now it could be because onbar is having to track more
objects for your restore, or could there have been some other change and now
onbar is loading up some object too low and so the onbar heap is crashing into
a shared library, or even shared memory which is what's causing the malloc to
fail? Not sure if HP has any way to get a process map of the onbar process so
you could see what might be conflicting with the heap.

I would suggest that you look at how big your ixbar file is. It might be
that
this file has grown and now you are just trying to load to many backup
objects as
Jacques pointed out. If you have not been running onsmsync to keep the
ixbar
file trimmed you can look at this utility.

This worked. We reduced the ixbar file, since it was gigantic.
