How informix stores them ?

I am new to informix and so this may be primitive for some. I want to find out where Informix store information about size of its field specially datetime and interval type ( I know in syscolumns). Others types is OK. I have not been able to find any algorithm to differentiat these two types datetime and Interval. I would highly appreciate your answers as soon as possible.
