You can debug compiled 4GL (ie I4GL as opposed to R4GL) using any system debugger. Just compile with the -g option and the -keep option so that the .ec files will be left around. When you debug you will need access to the .ec files and dbx, or whatever debugger, will show you the ESQL/C output from C4GL. The 4GL statements are in the ESQL/C code as comments so you can easily follow along. If you know any C and know your debugger, you will quickly become very comfortable debugging this way. I do it all the time. The only thing that is very difficult to debug are REPORT modules because of the non-structured code that is generated from them. INPUT and INPUT ARRAY statements are a little confusing at first but by placing breakpoints in each BEFORE AFTER and ON KEY section you are interested in you will quickly under stand what is going on (and your 4GL coding may even improve to boot). I do not mention R4GL because the 4GL Integrated Debugger is already available and remotable. Art S. Kagel
