from IDS 9.4 to IDS 10
Posted in 2005
A user upgrading from IDS 9.4 to IDS 10 on Solaris 8 moved the rootdbs symbolic link (from /informix9/rootdbs1 to /informix10/rootdbs1) and updated ROOTPATH in onconfig, but onstat/sysadmin still showed the old path. Replies explained this is expected: chunk paths are stored inside the root dbspace itself and are independent of INFORMIXDIR, so they survive upgrades unchanged — keep the old links in place. Suggested workarounds: rename chunks during a restore (9.40+), and 'onspaces -ren' to rename dbspaces (9.40.UC3+), though critical dbspaces like rootdbs can't be renamed.

Hi, I have changed rootdbs symbolic link path prior upgrade to IDS 10 from ids 9.4 on solaris 8 (from /informix9/rootdbs1 to /informix10/rootdbs1). The engine is online (without disk space initialization), however the rootdbs path still points to the old position (/informix9/rootdbs1)..!!! Is this normal .
The CHUNKPATHS (including the ROOTPATH) are independent of the installed Informix version (different INFORMIXDIR). They remain the same during an engine upgrade. Therefore you shouldn't make CHUNKPATHs dependent on IDS version directories - too late now :-) You keep the old path names during every upgrade. In your case: If you install the new IDS version into a new INFORMIXDIR (a good idea) you will have to keep at least the symbolic links to the rootdbs (and other dbspaces) in the old directory. Hi, I think you need to explain more clearly, what exactly you did and where you changed something. Did you change the symbolic link to point to somewhere else (using "rm" and "ln") ? Did you create a new symbolic link ? Where do your symbolic links point to now ? Or did you change the value of ROOTPATH parameter in your $ONCONFIG file ? Did you create a new $ONCONFIG file ? Did you set $ONCONFIG to the new file ? Hi, The symbolic link was formerly located at /informix9/rootdbs1. Then I've deleted it using 'rm' and create another link using 'ln -s' in the directory /informix10 and named it rootdbs1. Then I've change the same in onconfig file, and then I set the engine to online to discover it is still points to /informix9/rootdbs1, although this link is not present at OS level... Hope this help... -----Original Message----- From: Martin Fuerderer [mailto:MARTINFU@de.ibm.com] Sent: Monday, April 25, 2005 11:37 AM To: Adel Al-johar Cc: forum.subscriber@iiug.org; ids@iiug.org Subject: Re: from IDS 9.4 to IDS 10 [4787] Hi, I think you need to explain more clearly, what exactly you did and where you changed something. NO luck... I think waht you are trying to do can't be done... The path to the root dbspace is recorded inside the root dbspace itself... Hi, I think so. Although you have changed the onconfig value there is an internal reference to the old location. So your 'new' path_to_chunk pointed to an old chunk, and it found a reference to the 'old' path_to_chunk. The good news are that it works, as you said.... the bad news are that you can't change the rootdbs chunks to refelect your new configuration. If you
want ot change the chunk path name , you may do so
during a restore. There is new feature (since 9.40.UC1 as far as I know)
that allows
you to rename chunks during a restore.
Since 9.40.UC3 there is even an option to rename dbspaces using onspaces.
To rename a dbspace use the following onspaces utility command:
onspaces -ren old_dbspace_name -n new_dbspace_name
You cannot rename any critical dbspace, such as a root dbspace or a dbspace
that contains phys or logical logs.
For renaming chunks see the IDS 9.40 documentation.
For renaming dbspaces using onspaces see IDS 10.00 documentation
(Admin Guide)
With kind regards
Tilman
P.S. At risk of carring coals to Newcastle - here is again the link where
to get IDS documenation
