This is a multipart message in MIME format. --=_alternative 005CC737862569E6_= Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" We have had problems lately where processes that access the database have been getting orphaned. This morning at 8am several users (40+) processes suddenly had "1" as their parent id. Any ideas as to what is the cause? We have an apache web server and it also shows many more processes during this time than usual, some of those are orphaned as well. It sounds to me like some main controlling thread or process is getting killed or dying. What commands can I run to determine what is going on? Thanks so much for all your help. I sure appreciate such an informed group of people and all the help I have received in the past! we sometimes have this problem and it has to do with users not logging off the system correctly. It has to do with the way the application interacts with informix. For example, if a user simply closes the telnet window while still logged into the system, then their process become a runaway and get the 1 as the parent id. We then have to go and manually kill off those rogue processes. My advice is to properly train those folks to quit the application properly before shutting down telnet. At least that worked for our shop. Best of luck. Sounds to me like your program is probably ignoring SIGHUP, which is what you should get when the parent process dies. See the man page on signal(2) for details.
