Here is what support told my company a while back.
On 7.31, officially, anything which writes to a file is not expected to be able to write to more than 2GB, so it is not considered a defect if it cannot.
However, on some platforms that can handle more than 2GB, that limitation may not exist, technically. It depends on how the product was built, not on any setting or environment variable.
Until IDS 9.4 or later, IBM is not going to commit to larger than 2GB, so they will not specify which releases or which builds do not have the 2GB file size limit. Nor will the promise that, if it works on 7.31.UDx on a given OS, it will work on 7.31.UD(x+1) on that OS, or on 7.31.UDx on any other OS. Also, IBM will not fix any related bugs, such as a scenario we ran into where we could write to a file greater than 2GB, but could not read from it.
As several others have pointed out, you can always use tape. This was IBM's response to our pleas, also.
It is not a very helpful answer, but it was pretty firm when we got it from support. I would be surprised if IBM's policy has changed. Removing the 2GB limit is a big incentive to go to IDS 9.4.
