I don't know if this helps but we've noticed that on the NCR port, the informix security mechanisms do not traverse the inet_addr structure to match up the IP address with the name in .rhosts in the gethostbynum call. We tested this by creating a DNS structure with 4 names to the same I.P. address, for example 10.1.1.1 aka goofy, iserver, PTL3445 and development. If the .rhosts of machine 10.1.1.2 permits iserver, then rsh from 10.1.1.1 to 10.1.1.2 will work whereas Informix connections will not. If on the other hand the abovementioned .rhosts contains goofy instead of iserver, then both rsh and Informix work. This implies that Informix (on this port at least) is looking up the first name on the inet_addr structure and if it doesn't match, terminates the connection. The obvious workaround is to keep a one-to-one mapping between IP addresses and names so there is no confusion.
