ODBC and Large Results?

How does ODBC handle large result sets? For example, if an SQL query on a server requires a large answer set to be materialized (e.g., a sort required), where is the "set" housed while the app is FETCHing? Any rule of thumb limits to keep in mind? Locking considerations?
