During the backup process, the physical log has to be checked from time to
time to see if any pages have been updated that need to be placed in
archive. We don't allow them to go directly to the tape as this can cause
a system hang during the checkpoint (because the physical log file is
flushed during checkpoints). What happens is that the pages go into
virtural shared memory and are then flushed to disk files after the
checkpoint. I suspect that you might be doing some rather masive
updating during the archive and this is causing an increase usage of this
temporary table space.
