(I use Informix Online 4.1 with Linux 1.0.) I could run as root or informix but other users had problems. If I remember right, I fixed the problem by cleaning up my passwd file. Seems something somewhere is kinda picky about the format of each passwd entry. I think passwd lines ending with ":" were the problem: informix:*:200:200:Informix DBA:/u/informix: I just appended "/bin/sh" to such lines to give them an explicit shell command.
