German keyboard/characters -> very strange problem.

The application is developed on a SCO box in the UK, (i4gl 4.11, SE 5.03) On the customers site in Germany, for any input statement details are brought back from the database and displayed fine, this includes the extra german characters, however when a user enters a field ( e.g. Address ) the extra characters are replaced with ? or }. Any ideas why this is happening? (somehow its getting confused in the input statement thinking its english characters? or problem with 7bit/8bit characters?) what's puzzling is the intial display/input is ok, its only when a field is entered that the problem/corruption occurs? another strange thing, if I generate a form in sql, I can view/modify the extra characters without a problem. -- -----------------------------.
