In my opinion you shouldn't use onarchive instead of ontape. onarchive
does, unlike ontape, support the writing of archives and backups to
disk, and on the face of it this is its major advantage. Although it
works perfectly OK, Informix do not support writing logs/archives to
disk because it's all to easy to overwrite files that were actually
wanted. With onarchive you can't, theoretically, overwrite files that
are still wanted.
In my experience, onarchive is so unreliable, prone as it is to
myseterious failures, particularly in its continuous log option, and
liable to pack up becuase of bizzare inconsistencies between catalog and
reality, that a careful archive-to-disk strategy using ontape is far
less difficult to administer.
