Re: Backup Devices

Since you are using Informix 5, I guess you are using ontape for backup,
which makes me ask, how fast can you make a backup to a symbolic
link to /dev/null . This will be as fast as you get anyway.
We do 40 Gb (31Gb used) to a pipe with:
gzip --fast -c < /informix/etc/tapedev | split -b512m -
/backup/informix.level.0.
in 6h 30m to a local filesystem.
The archive level 0 then uses about 5.7 Gb in 11 files.
Our bottleneck now is the CPU needed for compression (the writing side).
You might also increase performance if you archive to a pipe using gzip
--fast
to compress the data before it gets written to tape (using dd) if you
have fast CPU's.
gzip --fast -c < /informix/etc/tapedev | dd of=/dev/<whatever> bs=256k
so long
