Informix migration from HPUnix to Linux
Posted in 2012
Someone asked how to move Informix 11.50 databases (with SDS/HDR cluster) from HP-UX ia64 to Linux, where a level-0 restore isn't possible, and wondered whether external tables could beat HPL and whether 11.70 offers a lower-downtime option. Replies: external tables work and are a bit faster than HPL; Enterprise Replication between old and new servers minimises downtime (but needs primary keys, awkward on huge tables). Art Kagel recommended his myexport/myimport (with myschema) as twice as fast as dbexport/dbimport and able to recreate indexes, constraints and procedures, which plain HPL does not; in external-table mode it needs only myschema and dbaccess but did not then handle blobs. No single choice was declared final.

Hi, IDS 11.50.FC8W2 on HP-UX B.11.31 U ia64 We have the following a part of MACH cluster Primary Server 2 SDS nodes HDR We are planning to migrate our Inofrmix databases from HPUnix to one of the Linux flavours. I understand that we need to do an import export (using HPL)of data and level 0 restore is out of question. could the external tables be an alternate approach, I am also exploring 11.7 if it has any new feature to do what we want to do with a minimum downtime Regards, Vikas
Yes, you can do that, it will be a bit faster than using HPLoader. Art Art S. Hello. You could always consider the option to migrate through ER between servers. That is awesome, mostly because of downtime reasons.... ;) Regards. Assuming you have PKs :-) Yes I know you can use ERKEYS but not on very large tables Cheers Paul -----Original Message----- From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of Alexandre Marini Sent: Friday, November 09, 2012 4:26 AM To: ids@iiug.org Subject: RE: Informix migration from HPUnix to Linux [28770] Hello. we plan to do this soon too, I plan to user the export/ import - why has no one mentioned this? I realise it is slower however i belive the integrity is better I like the way people say use HPL - in my opinion not as easy to do as it is to say .
There is no integrity difference at all Cheers Paul Paul Watson Oninit www.oninit.com +1 913 387 7529 On Nov 11, 2012, at 20:21, "KARL OLIVER" <karl.oliver@maf.govt.nz> wrote: > we plan to do this soon too, I plan to user the export/ import - why has n= o=20 > one mentioned this? does HPL load all the indexes constraints procs etc as well - I did not think it did , mind its years since I attempted using HPL
Using my dbexport/dbimport replacement tool, myexport/myimport, in external
table mode is twice as fast as dbexport/dbimport even if you don't also use
the parallel mode for export which can be even faster and it is just as
easy to use as dbexport/dbimport. BTW, myexport/myimport also has a mode
that uses HPL. External tables are a bit faster than HPL though.

HPL just moves data. You have to script the rest yourself -- or use myexport/myimport which takes care of all that for you. Art Art S. Art does your import/export run "out the box" as it were on HP.or does it require compiling stuff ? Does it handle smart blobs? Does HPL handle snart blobs?
Myexport/myimport use my dbschema replacement utility, myschema, which does
have to be compiled. Depending on what IO mode you choose, you MAY or may
not have to compile other utilities. To use the default IO mode, you need
Jonathan Leffler's sqlcmd utility. To use the HPL IO mode you need to
compile Ravi Khrishna's myonpload utility, but to use the EXTERNAL TABLE IO
mode (-E) you do not need anything else besides myschema and a local copy
of dbaccess.
In -E mode, it could be made to work with blobs, but currently it does not
(I honestly just missed adding the BLOBDIR clause to the external table
definitions coming out of myschema - putting it on my todo list now). I do
not know if blobs and smart blobs are supported by sqlcmd, maybe Jonathan
will respond to that here. IB that HPL supports blobs and smartblobs, but
I've never tried to do that myself. IBM can answer that one. If sqlcmd
and/or HPL supports it, then myexport in the appropriate mode does as well.
