First, Informix doesn't automatically listen to port 1525. Port 1525 has been registered for Informix. Sort of like registering common services. Mail for example uses port 25. So that third party developers can write applications to attach to certain ports. Since it is detailed in the Online manuals, most people use that port number. If you have multiple instances, you need to specify multiple port numbers for connections. Of course if you have shared memory as your only defined connection, then you don't have any ports active. (I mean defined in sqlhosts.) Now the next problem is that the API for I-NET/I-STAR is not *public* so you can't really write to them. Your best bet is to write your own daemon and have it call an app to interface with the database or something along those lines. -Mikey BTW, std disclaimer applies to all my postings.
