It has been generally well known that depending on the rowid is not a good idea. The use of this is not guarenteed in later releases of the Informix engine. Online I guess. I have used it under only one circumstance. I would like to know if this use is affected in later release than 4.12. I have passed "select ..... order by ....." strings into various library functions. These strings are prepared and declared and process with foreach, etc. Sometimes I have done the following: "select ... order by ...." and appended "into temp xxxxxx" onto the string. The string is then prepared and executed. Later I prepare a string such as: select from xxxxxx order by rowid rowid will produce the original order that was on the passed in select string. Obvioulsy, the function can be called with similiar select strings with the order being different at times. Will this technique still work in the future? -- Michael J.
