Counting the number of Linux installations is, as one might imagine, a hard problem. That's not stopping Linux International, though, with The Linux Counter. Their admittedly imprecise count is, as of a few minutes ago, 4 million, plus or minus a million. For specifics of their method and precise stats, see: http://counter.li.org I have heard figures of between 3 and 6 million bandied about recently, but what the "true" number is is anyone's guess.
