Windows 2008 - Informix 11.50FC8 - Fail to get con
Posted in 2011
Jeff Filippi couldn't start Informix 11.50FC8 on 64-bit Windows 2008 R2 (10 GB RAM, BUFFERS=1,000,000): the server failed to allocate a contiguous shared-memory block, with only ~3.2 GB going resident. He asked whether a Windows setting limits single segment size. Joerg Volz pointed to Microsoft's Windows memory-limit documentation, noting the OS should handle 32 GB but address-space fragmentation and other memory-hungry apps can interfere. Guy and Bryce Stenberg suggested raising SHMBASE above 4 GB/the system DLL range, using SHMNOACCESS to exclude ranges where DLLs load, and using Process Explorer on oninit.exe (with the base-address column) to spot DLLs landing in the middle of the intended range. No confirmation of a fix is recorded in the thread.

I have a system running Informix 11.50FC8 on Windows 2008 64 bit with 10 gig of memory. When I start the instance it complains that it cannot allocate a contiguous block of memory, I have buffers set to 1 million, so the first 3.2 gig of the buffers is in resident, the rest is put in the virtual memory. I am using the SHMBASE that is in the onconfig.std and in the machine notes. Is there any Windows 2008 parameter that controls the amount of a single memory segment size? Thanks, Jeff Jeffrey J. The M$ list is here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa366778.aspx Your Version should be able to handle 32GB, but: I surfed the web a bit on this subject, and it seems the typical M$ way: Marketing: "We support n TeraBytes of RAM...", Tech support: "... but there are several caveats. Like Graphic cards needing still space below 4GB to support legacy 32bit world..." Some User Forums FAQ lists showed up with similar problems to get continous memory, and presented several registry parameters but nothing I would try without further research. One other item there were apps consuming all available memory over the time and so eating up memory. One usual suspect was SQL Server running without a fixed memory limit (can be set on each running SQL Server instance if I remember right). I personally would now consult the Tech Ref books for Windows 2008 servers, but I have non here, sorry. Does it help if you set SHMBASE above the system dll range? Or use the onconfig parameter SHMNOACCESS to exclude the system dll range (not sure what that range is in your version of windows - use 'process explorer' they all start with 0x7F... ). Or use process explorer to view the oninit.exe process, have bottom pane show dll's, add column 'base address' - check no other processes are jumping into the middle of the memory range your trying to use. If they are then either shift your base address or use SHMNOACCESS parameter again. Regards, Bryce Stenberg.
