It is used to address the problem of rows that have been deleted but not committed ( and hence the delete might be rolled back). Version 6 onwards have a different design which uses a different strategy to address the problem. If you must use version 5, and you are using package software that does not allow you to alter the way locking is addressed, try running the database un-logged.
