I want to add a new user. This user should have only select - access on a table. Must the user known on the operating system, which rights are necessary ?

Informix will let you add permissions for a user that the OS does not know
about, however, that user will not be able to connect to the server from
a client since OS priveleging is used by informix to verify passwords,
allow no-password connections, etc. You just have to create the user:
GRANT CONNECT TO new_user;
Then for each table that is to be restricted:
REVOKE ALL ON some_table FROM public;
REVOKE ALL ON some_table FROM new_user;
GRANT SELECT ON some_table TO new_user;

This and Mr. Lommel's next question about authenticating through ODBC once again remind me to ask: does anyone know if Informix has finally addressed this in 9.2 (IDS.2000 I guess is the new name) by providing its OWN authentication mechanism? You know, similar to those, uh, other DB vendors. Trebor Fenstermaker BTG, Inc. Fairfax VA USA
