Steve,
We keep a signature field as data in one of the tables.
The signature version string in the database matches the SCCS version of the
dbschema output (enhanced with extent sizes and dbspace information).
The value on the field helps determine the kind of upgrade (alter table etc)
to apply against a given schema.
Another *very important* thing to remember during upgrades is to have
sufficient locks and the logical log space. If logical log space is NOT
sufficient, turn logging off before attepting a conversion.
I have done such conversion many times (and have been burned many times) during
the product maturation phase.
