System hangs when attempting to kill Informix front-end

We've encountered a problem with redirecting standard error from a 4GL program that uses a form. If I invoke the program with: filename.4ge 2>debug.out the program hangs if the 4GL program opens a form. If I then log on to another terminal and attempt to kill the front-end process (the 4GE, not the sqlturbo), using the commands: kill -2 <process_id> kill -15 <process_id> kill -9 <process_id> somewhere in the sequence, the system hangs! The machine will not respond to ping from elsewhere in the network, nor will it respond to its own console. The system is locked tight and we end up rebooting. Has anyone encountered this before? Is it a known problem with either Informix or HP/UX? Any help would be appreciated.
