I run AIX here and duplicate by database on five different machines none of which have the same disk architecture. All that is necessary, as you surmised, is that the target machine (the one you will restore to) has LV's of the same size and name as the source machine. Informix is ignorant of the physical implementation of where the LV's are (as it should be). The tbtape -r will check this right at the beginning of the restore process.
