RE: Riddle me this...

Its not just the article. Its the fact that DB2 not IDS is being given away for *free* as part of the Ubuntu distro. (I'm forced to run Centos but that's another story...) Yes, English is not my native language, and some issues may arise from that (it happened in the past), but again, I believe YOU missed MY point. Whoever reads your email may be left to think IDS does not run on Ubuntu. My email, and Andreas complement explain to whoever is interested, that IDS ALREADY runs on Ubuntu and that information is very clear in the Net (both on the official product pages and on other sites). It runs on Ubuntu for a long time... That's my point. Your point is the usual. Not that we're tired of it... By no means! >From an Informix fan point of view I would like to see IDS referenced on that article of course. Regards. The issue isn't if IDS runs on Ubuntu or which flavors of Linux, but that IBM clearly ignores IDS as a database of choice and markets only DB2. I'm not sure if there is an issue concerning reading comprehension (I understand English is not your first language) or if you're intentionally being dense because you want to try and steer this conversation in terms of a 'positive'. (Ala 'spin' or damage control.) The simple fact is that if IBM were to poll all of their 340K employee roster and asked them to name/list all of the database software that IBM sells under the IBM brand, (Not including Oracle or other products that they resell.) What percentage of the employees would recognize and name IDS? (This is a legitimate concern because all employees of a 'services' company are in fact representatives and 'quasi sales reps'.) So... lets get back to the point. IBM doesn't market individual products but the brand. So at the pillar level you have Rational, Lotus, Tivolli, ... and Information Management. What's the Q rating for 'Information Management'? (Assuming you know what a Q rating is...) So when IBM does something like putting a fully functional version of DB2 out on Ubuntu as a way of promoting their product, one wonders why not IDS? Both products are becoming less important to the IT industry because MySQL has captured a certain percentage of the mind share along with Oracle, the 800lb Gorilla that everyone hates but still has in their shop. (Unless they are a Wal*Mart which can buy IDS a ridiculously low prices...) The fact boys and girls... not a lot of new blood here. There's a reason for that. Think about it. Special note to Jerry K. Time to eat crow. ;-) You may not like my posts, find some of what I say offensive. (That's why Gumby exists BTW...) But I find IBM's lack of intelligence and consistent behavior insults our intellect. One of the areas that IBM is making traction with IDS happens to be something I tried to do when I was an IBMer and I posted about it over 4 years ago. Come to Chicago Jerry, you might learn something. ;-) But hey! What do I know? The Chicago Area Hadoop User Group has around 70+ members, meets on a monthly basis and is finding traction with major corporations along with local university students. IDS? Not so much. -G Date: Wed, 21 Jul 2010 22:32:04 +0100 Subject: Re: Riddle me this... From: domusonline@gmail.com To: informix-list@iiug.org IDS is certified for some previous Ubuntu versions (8). Let me guess. This is a way to improve DB2's adoption rate and numbers. C'mon, even the ginger kid gets more attention than IDS. Hotmail has tools for the New Busy.
