But as far as I can see :lots of people like the idea but the discusssion about Java :is more based on hopes than on facts. IBM is spending US$100 million on making Java a success and have decided to make it one of their major tools. It's becoming available on every IBM architecture from PC's on up to mainfraims. They have allready done banking applications using Java. Informix and Oracle are doing a lot with Java and are spending dollars on it. Java version 1.0.2 had several problems. We couldn't use it. They are mostly solved with version 1.1 (or 1.1.1) and a series of API's, the JavaBeans, full CORBA integration and so on. This is very usefull. There are development tools ready or in the pipeline from allmost every large suppliers of such tools. This has to come before a large number of applications. There are people who have written applications, even large ones, but many of them are not advertised. They are either inhouse or for special markets where no advertising is needed. You might check out www.gamelan.com for a list of some applications. (It has become more difficult to fin anything interesting than it used to be, but there are usefull applications if you look.) Yes, it's early for Java, but it has come far enough along that it's clear that it will be a major force in the development tools market as well as in many other respects.
