Is it possible to timeout 4GL?
Posted in 1994
Hello, We are looking for a way to timeout 4GL programs when there is no terminal response after n minutes. The problem we are having is as follows: Users are running 4GL programs on our HP9000. They are accessing the 9000 from their PC's using a terminal emulator which starts up a telnet session on the 9000. The problem arises when users turn off their PC's without exiting the 4GL application - all the 9000 processes stick around until we kill them or the system is rebooted. The processes invoked are (in this order) telnetd, ksh, fglgo, sqlturbo. The processes aren't doing anything in themselves but they are taking up process slots that cause us to exceed the number of informix users I configured informix for, to exceed the number of terminal sessions configured for the system, exceed the number of users configured in UNIX, etc. All these problems prevent more users from logging in and doing work. Any solutions? Firing the offending users is NOT an option - that is not the HP Way! :-) Also, there is no way to time out the telnetd process as it must wait until its children processes die before ending. I have written 3GL programs in the past and always included a call to time out when there is no response from the terminal after so many minutes. Is there any way to do this in 4GL? If other people have run into this problem, what have you done?
