The dropping of detached indexes is almost instantaneous because the index "data" does not have physically to be deleted: just the pointers to the tablespace(s) removed.. But with attached indexes, which I believe was the default before v9, the deletion process needs to trawl through the combined data and index tablespaces and physically remove the index data.
