IEPL-HQ-ISS got the error 'This is not a cpio file, bad header' installing Informix 4GL 6.05.UD1 from CD-ROM with cpio. Alex Daman and Neil Truby suggested the media may be tar format (tar tvf, ls -l on the mount point). Paul Watson advised running file on the CD file and setting cpio blocksize to zero. Peter said it may be a file on the CD to mount first and feed to cpio. No confirmation of a fix.

The distribution CD's are usually in cpio or tar format.
Try reading the tape with the tar command.
tar tvf device_name.

The 4GL that I've just loaded from CD-ROM, admittedly a later version, was
in tar format. Maybe yours is?
Try doing ls -l /CDROM (where /CDROM is the mount point of your drive) -
this should give some clues.

Sometimes it is a file on CD, so you have to mount the CD first
und using the file on CD as cpio's input.
