DBSPACE / DBSIZE

I am forced to inherit and maintain and Informix database for now. I studied the Informix book(s) over the weekend and have yet to find what I need. I hope to be a master some day as well, but for now I need immediate help with these questions: How do I determine the current size of my dbspace in megabytes?? What "chunks" are currently assgined to the database (?) and What "chunks" ( if any) have been created and are available on the system if I need to add to the dbspace? My Platform is as follows: SCO UNIX 5.05 INFORMIX 7.30 uc2 Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Stacey Windsor x6071
Hi! To determine the size of the databases: login as informix onmonitor Status->Spaces Use control-b to display info about dbspaces. One page is 2K on your system. You can verify this by looking at onconfig file in $INFORMIXDIR/etc Databases reside on dbspaces which in turn are build of chunks. To find out where is a database use Status->Databases The most fricky part is to find out if and where you have available disk space to add to the database. If you are using raw disk, you will have to find out from the onmonitor output and fdisk/divvy output how it was done. There is more than one way of doing this. Please post more info if you need help. HTH Michael P.S. Welcome to the world of Informix. Stacey Windsor wrote: > I am forced to inherit and maintain and Informix database for now. Welcome to the club. Please do not depend on your browser to line-wrap
your posts. Many of us use mailers that will just lose everything beyond
column 80, so hit return at the margin, thanks.

What you want is in the Administrator's Guide which is not small but a
useful read.

onstat -d will list the chunks in your server and the dbspaces. There isa column (dbs) which indicate to which dbspace each chunk belongs. You
just have to add up the 'size' and 'free' columns to get the total
allocated and available. I have posted a set of scripts to do this. The
package utils_ak in the IIUG Software Repository
(www.iiug.org/software/index.html to start) contains ESQL/C and shell/perl
script versions of a program, dbsavail & dbsavail.sh, that will perform
the arithmetic for you.

That depends on your predecessor. We place links to the actual chunk
device files in a directory under informix's home and so find all active
chunk files there. When the sysadmin creates new chunk files in /etc for
me he names the device files, using the volume manager, with names like
informixraw_001 -> informixraw_200 etc, so when I need a new chunk I find
one of these files to which I do not have a link pointing. Next I verify
that it is not being used using BOTH the aspace/printchunks utility (in
the same utils_ak package) and /etc/fuser (a UNIX utility to see what
processes currently have a file open). Then I create a link and set the
device file's permissions and ownerships. Finally I add the chunk using
the linkname.
If your predecesor and sysadmin are not so anul retentive as we you will
have to poke around to see what disk or logical volume partitions are
used and unused and set them up.
