Informix 9 to 10

We recently upgraded from Informix 9 to 10.
It looks like the sysmaster did not get built correctly.
The software vendor we use spoke with Informix and they recommend
running a command /opt/Informix/etc/conv/rebuildsmi.sh. they say all
users need to be off the system. They want any errors or complaints
captured and sent to Informix. They seem to think this will fix the
problem but they also said they had a similar issue with another client
and Informix crashed. What is strange to me is the database engine is
up and running. People have been working in the database and making
changes.
This weekend I will be running the command they recommend. I'm
preparing for the worst in case the engine doesn't come back or it
completely crashes. I have been making onunload copies of the live
database as well as dbexports. My thinking is the worst case scenario
where Informix needs to be reloaded, I can then reload the databases.
Has anyone run into a similar issue? And has anyone run the
rebuildsmi.sh command to fix this problem?
I seem to remember that you also have to run it in single user mode. In
any case it couldn't hurt.

The IDS engine does not need the sysmaster database. It is a convenience for
DBAs/users. You can rerun the buildsmi script anytime as long as there are no
other users on the server. It drops any existing sysmaster database, creates a
new one, populates the real and virtual tables in there, and creates the views
and stored procedures. It's harmless. I have occassionally seen the script
fail during initial instance install only to work fine on a rerun sometime
later.
