still several problems with Red Hat Linux 9
Posted in 2003
A user on Red Hat Linux 9 reported RDS 7.32UC1 core dumping on r4gl -V (glibc/ctype incompatibility), plus PHP 4.3.3 build errors with --with-informix (worked around with --disable-cli) and Art Kagel's dostats failing to compile. Ronald Cole said IBM had released a patched CSDK 2.81UC2X5 that fixes the ctype macro problem and allows dynamically linked 4GL/ESQL executables, though static linking remained broken, with a proper toolchain promised for 2004Q1. Jonathan Leffler (IBM) asked why static libraries were needed, as IBM was considering dropping them on Linux. No answer was given on where ordinary users could obtain the X5 patch, and the PHP/dostats issues went unresolved.

Hi all, after i got a trial version of RDS 7.32UC1 for Linux and installed it on my new RH 9 Linux box I always get a core dump when trying to run r4gl -V. I installed this version along with the IIUG trial version of IDS 9.40UC2 and the newest CSDK 2.81UC2. I know that there has been something broken within the compatability of the RedHat glibc and the Informix database and tools. The database runs fine now but I cannot write any 4GL programs. An older RDS 7.30UC5 runs fine but isn't capable of the new features built in with the new 9.40 version. Another problem was to get PHP 4.3.3 up and running. When I did a configure --with-informix=$INFORMIXDIR and typed make it stated that some references couldn't be found. After putting --disable-cli into the configure it compiled well and runs fine now. And finally Art Kagels wonderful dostats won't compile, even with the newest CSDK. IBM now has a "patched" csdk-2.81UC2X5 that allows you to create dynamic 4gl/esql executables. But -static is still broken on both RHL9 and RHEL3.0beta2; so while I can finally continue development after waiting *five* months for a "fix", I still cannot deliver statically linked apps for my clients. IBM now says 2004Q1 for a 4gl tool chain that works out of the box on RHL9 or RHEL3.0 (which I take to mean "don't expect it before March 31st"). I guess that's pretty telling/damning about IBM's Linux strategy for Informix and how seriously they take their customers who *do* pay for support. -- Forte International, P.O. Any idea where I can get it from? 2.81UC2 available for free download from IBM still has troubles with the ctype macros. And I mean to my work email address - this is a work item. We found some sort of workaround that seems to work in the current version (and allows you to use static libraries), but since I don't know what it actually means (and no-one else is sure either), we're very uncomfortable in using it as "the solution" when for all we know it is an ancient hack that goes away with the next release of RH. -- Jonathan Leffler #include <disclaimer.h> Email: jleffler@earthlink.net, jleffler@us.ibm.com Guardian of DBD::Informix v2003.04 -- http://dbi.perl.org/

And I mean to my work email address - this is a work item. I haven't had a statically linked app break when Red Hat fu^H^Hmesses up a glibc security errata, that's why. I don't need them to work between RHL releases, just be a little more resiliant to the boneheaded Red Hat policy that gets a security problem addressed in under 24 hours, whereas a glibc snafu takes weeks! -- Forte International, P.O.
