Re: ISQL install problem
Posted in 2006
Andy couldn't connect after installing ISQL into a separate directory (/infmx-extras/isql) from the IDS install in /usr/informix. Helpers asked for sqlhosts, 'which isql' and $PATH, revealing that PATH still pointed at /usr/informix/bin/isql rather than the ISQL install, so the wrong binary was being picked up. He corrected PATH, INFORMIXDIR and LD_LIBRARY_PATH to point at the ISQL directory, but the connection failure persisted. Keith suggested on-site checking; no resolution is recorded in the thread.

Hi, Thanks for your reply - I'm not exactly sure what you mean or how I would check this. I certainly haven't intentionally done this. Thanks Andy

Hi Clive,
Thanks for your reply. The content of my sqlhosts file is as follows:
demo_on onipcshm on_hostname on_servernamedemo_se seipcpip se_hostname sqlexec
linux_test onsoctcp newserver1 linux_test
ol_server1 onsoctcp server1 ol_server1
ol_server2 onsoctcp server2 ol_server2
The output of 'which sql' is interesting though, it is:
/usr/informix/bin/isql
although isql is installed in the directory /infmx-extras/isql and this
is also the value of $INFORMIXDIR.
Thanks,
Andy

What is the value of $PATH
Keith
Hi Keith, /usr/kerberos/sbin:/usr/kerberos/bin:/usr/informix/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/NX/bin:/root/bin:/usr/NX/bin Thanks, Andy

However I would expect isql to be in /infmx_extras/bin/isql. INFORMIXDIR should therefore be /infrmx_extras and PATH=$INFORMIXDIR/bin:$PATH. When you installed isql did you change $INFORMIXDIR to the target directory? Keith
Hi keith, Understood. I've changed the value of $PATH so that it now reads: /usr/kerberos/sbin:/usr/kerberos/bin:/usr/informix/bin:/usr/local/sbin:usr/local/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/NX/bin:/root/bin:usr/NX/bin:/infmx-extras/isql/bin $INFORMIXDIR is set to /infmx-extras/isql 'which isql' gives the following: /infmx-extras/isql/bin/isql I also set my LD_LIBRARY_PATH to be: /infmx-extras/isql/lib:/infmx-extras/isql/lib/esql:/infmx-extras/isql/lib/tools substituting the /usr/informix for /infmx-extras/isql So all seems in order in that sense. I still have the same problem when trying to connect though! In answer to your other question, yes, I installed ISQL with the $INFORMIXDIR set to /infmx-extras, but then temporarily set it back to /usr/informix after installing IDS so that I could launch an instance of informix. Thanks, Andy

INFORMIXDIR set to /infrmx_extras and isql in /infmx-extras/isql/bin/isql with PATH of /infmx-extras/isql/bin is incorrect. Either INFORMIXDIR should be /infmx-extras/isql. May not make any difference, but it is not right. Beyond that I think you need a second pair of eyes on-site to check and confirm everything, sorry :- (( Keith
Hi Keith, Sorry, that was a typo, $INFORMIXDIR was set correctly. No worries, thanks for all your help with this anyway. Even if I haven't sorted the problem, I understand a bit more anyhow! Thanks, Andy
