Is it a machine difference? Longer $PATH or $LD_LIBRARY_PATH with more or
less to wade through?

How many cpus on the host?
How many cpu vps configured?
What does iostat -x4 give?
What does vmstat 2 5 give?
What does top show for memory and cpu utilization?
Any errors in /var/log/messages or the online.log?
