HPL Conversion (vomitted)... Question
Posted in 2008
The poster (IDS 10.00.UC8 on Solaris 8) needed to build HPL load/unload jobs with delimited files and feared hand-writing spec files listing column offsets and lengths for every column of every table, ruling out the GUI. He answered himself shortly after: with delimited unloads no offsets/lengths are needed — just write a small device-array spec file, create it with 'onpladm create object', then 'onpladm create job <name> -d <device> -D <db> -t <table> -flu'. Others confirmed onpladm is the right, scriptable, supported tool.

Pertinents: IDS 10.00.UC8 Sun 2.8 I am FORCED, due to working practices beyond my control, to create HPL load/unload conversion jobs using a delimited format. It seems from my initial investigation that I am going to need to create spec files that detail the column offsets and lengths for every <OBNOXIO> column (that is my new way to curse here) in every <OBNOXIO> table in the <OBNOXIO> database that I wish to unload or load. Someone tell me they have a kick<OBNOXIO> script to do this or cool idea? I really don't want to do this by hand. By the time I am done I will have hands like Dan Uggla - (non baseball nerds, look that one up). Dinner on me (in Kansas City area) for anyone who can solve this dilemna... "Use the GUI" is not an acceptable solution to this question either. MM
Never mind it's easier than I thought. Since I want delimited unload files I
just need to first create my device array - I use the spec file:
BEGIN OBJECT DEVICEARRAY maya
BEGIN SEQUENCE
TYPE FILE
FILE /users/jmagie/COOL_SCRIPTS/HPL/data/file.unl
TAPEBLOCKSIZE 0
TAPEDEVICESIZE 0
PIPECOMMAND
END SEQUENCE
END OBJECT
Then create my device:
onpladm create object maya.spec
Then create my job (-d device, -D database, -t table, -flu load and unload)
onpladm create job maya -d maya -D maya -t tab1 -flu
And Badda bing badda boom I am good to go...
I have not been drinking...

Mike,
Sorry pal no magic script here. I used to use HPL a while back,
specially using delimited files. You don't need to specify lengths or
offsets unloading delimited files. The graphic interface is pretty easy
to use on Component -> Generate a Job, you specify a job name, a
database, and a table name, and a device and then GUI generates all the
relationships for you.
Only issue I had were the devices. I had pretty big tables and there I
needed multiple devices, where typing was a chore. What I used to do is
to create the a delimited file with the onpload:device table structure
and load it before creating the jobs, so they were readily available on
the drop down box. That was easily scriptable. I used that only on the
bigger tables the small ones were just unloaded and loaded back with
dbload utility.

Works pretty well, does pretty much what it sounds like you want and
is supported.
