ids without network?
Posted in 2011
Problem: IDS 11.70.TC3IE on Windows Server 2008 wouldn't start/run on a demo laptop unless the machine was connected to a network. Suggested fix: make the server listen on the loopback interface by using localhost/127.0.0.1 instead of the machine's hostname — on Unix in $INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts (or alias the hostname to localhost in /etc/hosts), and on Windows in the sqlhosts registry key (HKLM\\\\software\\\\Informix\\\\sqlhosts\\\\<server>, Host value), then restart the IDS service. Art Kagel noted INFORMIXSQLHOSTS only matters for a non-default sqlhosts file/location, so its blank setting in setnet32 was irrelevant. The poster never confirmed whether this worked, so no confirmed resolution is recorded.

This concerns IDS 11.70.TC3IE on Window Server 2008. We have laptop that we can use for demos but Informix will not run without a connection to a network. Is there a setting someplace that will allow this?
take localhost on 127.0.0.1 ? 127.0.0.1 is always set to the hostname localhost in /etc/hosts (*nix machines) or /Windows/System32/Drivers/etc/hosts. Every machine is able to find "herself" by referring to localhost or 127.0.0.1 Assuming a "standard" Informix on a Unix box: Usually the hostname is in $INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts: replace the hostname with "localhost" it´s usually the 3rd entry or if you run on a not network connected box, you can modify /etc/hosts on the Unix side and add your hostname from sqlhosts as an alias to the localhost entry in /etc/hosts. Another possibility: If you run your Demo System with VMWare, add the VMware Network to your VMWare Software, and use a address from this VMware network and set the appropriate hostname/IP entries in /etc/hosts. There is no such file on a Windows installation in the "%INFORMIXDIR%/etc" folder or anyplace that I know of. The registry is used, I believe. Under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/software/Informix/sqlhosts/databasename" I have: Host REG_SZ *sixfore Protocol REG_SZ olsoctcp Service REG_SZ turbo6 My machine name is sixfore (not the laptop in question, but it is not here now and it runs the same os and IDS version) . I guess you are saying to replace "*sixfore" with 127.0.0.1 and bounce the IDS service? Also setnet32 has a line without a value: INFORMIXSQLHOSTS= does this need to change? -----Original Message----- From: Joerg Volz Sent: Thursday, December 29, 2011 4:19 PM To: Bill Hamilton ; ids@iiug.org Subject: RE: ids without network? INFORMIXSQLHOSTS only needs to be set if you have an sqlhosts file named something other than 'sqlhosts' or which is in a location other than the 'etc' subdirectory under INFORMIXDIR. Art Art S. as Art said, INFORMIXHOSTS is of no interest in this case. I never run a =
IDS under Windows, but that registry entry you mentioned should be the =
right one, but please: enter localhost, not the IP Adress... =20
If I am wrong, please correct me.
To all A happy new year!=20
