User informix exists BEFORE installation?
User informix has uid > 100 ?
Group informix has gid > 100 ?
User informix is a member of group informix?
You have enough space?
Is $INFORMIXDIR/bin in your PATH? (I forgot this once!)
Try the order
isql
4gl-RDS
r4gl <- This should provide the run-time enviroment perhaps RDS
AFTER r4gl screws it up?

What does fglverno give?
What does onstat - give? (Yes I know there is no engine running
you should get a 'Shared memory is not initialised for....' message.
