dbexport

So I'm trying to learn about dbexport from TFM (INFORMIX OnLine Administrator's Guide Version 5.0). It says on page 7-4 that if I use the -o option, the "directory cannot exist". But the command complains if it *doesn't* exist and succeeds if it does. Am I misunderstanding "cannot exist" or shouldn't I argue with success?
