Two INFORMIXDIR values?

Hello All,
I started to play with Informix recently and experienced following
problem. The server IDS I installed on Windows 2000 host. INFORMIXDIR
variable points to the folder containing the sever, c:\\Informix. OK.
On another Windows machine I installed SDK and tried to code an
application retrieving data from the server.
The problem is that on the client computer the INFORMIXDIR points to
the folder containing SDK stuff, for example c:\\Program
Files\\Informix\\Client-SDK. That causes that example appplications,
like dbaccess can't setup connection to IDS. When I change the
INFORMIXDIR variable so that it points to remote host, for example
\\\\remote_host\\Informix, the dbaccess runs fine, but esql cannot
compile the .ec file, because it needs files from the client machine,
placed in the folder pointed by INFORMIXDIR.
God, what I did wrong?
Any hints will be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Grzesiek

You used Windows?
Sorry to be smug about it but the real question is why are you using
Windows? Can you use Linux? You'll find it much easier to manage
and deploy if you don't have to do this on Windows. Informix was
never really designed to work as well on Windows as it does on UNIX
or Linux.

Informix was first ported to Windows around 10 years ago (7.10.TD1), in
some ways it improved upon the UNIX design, for example reducing context
switching overhead by implementing virtual processors as operating
system threads instead of processes. Admittedly some features such as
multiple residency weren't ported to Windows until version 7.30.
Confusion usually arises from the way IDS and Client SDK use the Windows
registry. In the case of this problem there are some things I don't
understand..
You installed IDS on machine1, and Client SDK on machine2. Where are you
running dbaccess.exe from? Are you running it on machine2 using a share
on machine1? I'm not sure I'd call dbaccess an example application, it's
an IDS utility. If you want to use it, why not install IDS and Client
SDK on machine2 together and do a remote connection in dbaccess to
machine1? If this was UNIX (since we're making the comparison) I'd
telnet to machine1 to run dbaccess if I didn't want to install IDS on
machine2. Have you considered a similar approach to make a remote
Windows connection to machine1, e.g. Remote Desktop, install a telnet
server, vnc, ssl connection, etc..

To be pedantic, Informix was in fact, as per the derivation of its name, *designed* to work only on UNIX.
