KUWAIT PETROLEUM SELECTS INFORMIX KPI to Build Enterprisewide Applications with INFORMIX-OnLine Dynamic Server and INFORMIX-NewEra Follows Other Significant New Business in Europe MENLO PARK, Calif. (April 3, 1995) -- Informix Software, Inc., (NASDAQ: IFMX) the leading provider of parallel processing database technology today announced that Kuwait Petroleum International (KPI) has signed a three-year global license contract to build corporate-wide information systems with INFORMIX(R)-OnLine Dynamic Server(TM) and INFORMIX-NewEra(TM), Informix's second generation client/server application development tool. KPI will use Informix databases on all of its corporate and operational information systems for 15 countries. KPI will develop and deploy operational and finance systems; retail marketing and sales databases; and executive information and decision support systems using the full suite of Informix database server, tools, and connectivity products. KPI selected Informix for its commitment to open systems and its ability to provide the functionality, high performance, and scalability for KPI's enterprisewide applications. "Informix technology will provide KPI with a clear migration path toward a totally object-oriented development environment," said Chris Taylor, coordinator for information services at KPI. "NewEra provides a simple migration path from existing INFORMIX-4GL solutions because the applications can share the same logic code. KPI selected Informix database technology because of the company's commitment to openness and its ability to provide the functionality, scalability and high performance needed to manage data on a corporate-wide scale." Recent European Wins KPI is the latest in a number of major contracts signed by Informix with European-based businesses and government agencies. "We're seeing an acceleration of major new opportunities in Europe: the European open relational database management system market is expected to double in size by the year 2001," said Phillip White, chairman and CEO of Informix. "We now have all the business elements in place to meet the needs of major corporations and are planning to increase our market share through sustained and consistent growth. " *France Telecom, the fourth largest telephone company in the world, selected Informix as its RDBMS supplier for its future UNIX applications after a thorough evaluation of competing RDBMS products. France Telecom chose the INFORMIX-OnLine Dynamic Server for its parallel processing capabilities and scalability provided by Informix's Dynamic Scalable Architecture. *The British Broadcasting Co. (BBC) has built a core business application, the Programme Database System (PRDB) based on Informix database technology. PRDB provides a single, comprehensive information and decision support system for network television channel management. The application integrates the requirements of TV program commissioning; cost control and reporting; finance planning; forecasting and monitoring audience volume and appreciation reporting and program stock control in a single environment. *Rikspolisstyelsen, (RPS), the National Swedish Police Board selected INFORMIX-OnLine Dynamic Server as its strategic supplier for local and regional systems used in Sweden's police districts. As the systems grow in number of users and volume of information, RPS required that its RDBMS maintain high performance and availability. RPS selected OnLine Dynamic Server for its scalability, parallelism, data replication, and certified security. Future client/server applications to be developed using Informix include systems to track goods, arms, and preliminary investigations. INFORMIX-NewEra is Informix's object-oriented client/server application development environment for enterprise computing. The product features a powerful and flexible database application language, productive visual programming tools, support for team-oriented development, reusable class libraries, and flexible application deployment, all within a client/server-ready package that supports open connectivity to Informix and non-Informix relational databases. OnLine Dynamic Server is based on Informix's next generation, multithreaded parallel processing database architecture, Dynamic Scalable Architecture (DSA). In order to handle larger databases with improved processing performance, DSA was designed to provide parallel processing as a core capability. This core, internal parallelism enables OnLine Dynamic Server to achieve superior performance by processing database tasks in parallel and maximizing the use of multiprocessor hardware. DSA is designed to exploit all the hardware capabilities available on the open systems market including uniprocessor, symmetric multiprocessor (SMP), loosely coupled clusters and massively parallel processors.
