dostats compile fail
Posted in 2012
User couldn't compile dostats on AIX with Informix 11.50, getting "Undefined symbol .main" and BIGINT-related compilation errors. Diagnosis: CSDK version 3.00 was too old (BIGINT support requires CSDK 3.50+). Also needed to use makefile.nognumake for systems without GNU Make, and potentially deal with AIX's ar utility incompatibility. Solution: upgrade to CSDK 3.50+.

I'm having a problem compiling dostats on AIX:
Using the make file (I changed it to use the AIX lines):
make
INFORMIXC=xlc esql -O -DHAVE_GNU_GETOPT=1 -DHAVE_GETOPT_H=1 -o ul -lc
ld: 0711-317 ERROR: Undefined symbol: .main
ld: 0711-345 Use the -bloadmap or -bnoquiet option to obtain more information.
make: 1254-004 The error code from the last command is 8.
Stop.
Using esql directly:
> esql -o dostats dostats.ec
esqlc: "dostats.ec", line 441: Warning -33014: Illegal use of record/structure
'bigint'.
esqlc: "dostats.ec", line 450: Warning -33014: Illegal use of record/structure

I'm not sure where to go from here. We're running Informix 11.50. Not sure
about the SDK version, if someone could direct me on how to get the version
I'd me more than happy to provide it.

esql -V will give you the version number. BIGINT support has been around
for a while, including IDS 11.50, so I suspect you are using a fairly
seriously out-of-date CSDK (3.00 or older).
A good first step would be to upgrade to CSDK 3.50, at least as a trial.

OK, two separate problems:
1. The "Undefined symbol .main" is caused by using the default makefile
on a system that does not have GNU Make. Switch to the makefile.nognumake
(and in myschema.d myschema.mk.norcs.nognumake).
2. The second problem is probably being caused by using an older CSDK,
probably v3.10 since support for BIGINT began with IDS 11.50 and CSDK
v3.50. You probably have an early release of 11.50 because the later
releases included installation of the latest (at the time) CSDK. You need
to upgrade to a later version of the CSDK - it is available online at
http://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/download/search.jsp?rs=ifxdl You
may have to login to your IBM id before being given access to that page, I
don't remember.
3. You may hit this one next if you have not already dealt with it:
AIX's ar utility is not compatible with the .ar archive that contains the
source files for myschema because myschema.source.ar is in Unix System V
format and AIX is the last OS that still supports the older BSD format
archives. You will need to either install GNU ar or my portable ar utility
(ar2) which you can download from the IIUG Repository, compile it and
change the AR= entry in the makefile from AR=ar to AR=<path to the ar2
executable>. (FYI, do not replace the system's ar utility with ar2 or GNU
ar as the former can't be used to build object libraries - though it can
read and write AIX readable archives - and the latter only reads and
produces the System V format which AIX doesn't understand.)
Let me know if you are still having problems after dealing with these.

1) Sorry, I should have mentioned that I renamed Makefile to Makefile.gnumake
and then did an ln -s Makefile.nognumake Makefile. So, yes - I am using the
non gnu make version of the file.
2) per another suggestion, I ran "esql -V" and got back:
IBM Informix CSDK Version 3.00, IBM Informix-ESQL Version 3.00.UC2
I'll get to work on updating that.
3) I'm mostly interested in dostats at this time, so I'll just compile that
one by itself for now. On a side note, if the .ar archive is not recognized by
all platforms, is there a reason you don't switch the archive to something
else (a tarball perhaps)?

Justin:
If you compile it by hand, you will need to include the getopt.c in the
compile to support optional and long options. The AIX library's getopt
doesn't support them properly. Also for IDS 10.00 and later you should be
compiling the dostat_ng.ec (next generation) rather than the
dostats.ecsource which is only still around because I've removed
support for Informix
SE, online, and the earlier IDS releases from the next generation source to
clean it up (runs faster too without all that clutter and it allowed me to
finally fix some pernicious and stubborn old bugs that I could never find
in the older source):
esql -O -o dostats dostats_ng.ec getopt.c
There is a reason I'm still using ar instead of tar. Tar files don't get
along well with emailers and can't be included in a shar (shell archive).
The IIUG Repository requires a shar file containing the source. I supposed
I could switch to a zip file, but since I long ago wrote ar2 (long before I
wrote the utils2_ak utilities), it is very easy to compile and use, and now
that HPUX and OpenBSD support System V archives there's little impetous to
do so just for AIX users.
Hmm, the problem with compiling ul/bload/bunload is almost always caused by
a non-GNU make. If there are any "$^" in the makefile you are using, just
edit it to change them all to "$?" which works.
FYI, I just uploaded a new version of utils2_ak to the Repository, but it
won't be available for download for a few days depending on how busy the
IIUG web folk are with their "real" lives. No changes to dostats, but some
fixes to myschema and two new utilities dbscript (applies a command - SQL
or shell - to tables selected from the database) and dbsavail (updated to
better support IDS 10.00 and later and moved from the utils_ak package). If
you want me to send you the updated package before it appears online, let
me know.
