Online 7.1/Slow response from client apps

We have a database in raw dbspace on a Sparc 20, having a table with about 45000 rows in it. Response for clients to updates/queries, etc. is way slow, sometimes as slow as one to two minutes. The server appears to finish processing info very quickly, but the client end takes forever to show results. Any ideas? Thanks...
