You can do the following:
select col1, col2 col5, col30, col12 from my_table where 1=0
into temp my_temp_table with no log;
You can also use a serial column in the where clause in this way:
... where the_serial_col < 0 (or is NULL when it has been declared not
NULL or primary key)
