Amazon EC2....

Hi, I just sign to Amazon EC2 to check how works the instances with Informix...and for my surprise I found only two images, with Informix Express and Informix Workgroup... I'm still little lost on the amazon site... for me all that is to much confusing... So, anyone already use this services? Already used with Innovator-C ? They can be used into the EC2 ? If exists some image with Innovator-C or growth.. can appoint me where I found it.. My objectives... discovery how works EC2 with Informix, what is the costs....and the possibility to configure a Drupal on my site accessing the Informix/EC2 as database... I just don't found yet a host sevice what want to offer Informix Innovator-C, just like mysql to use as database option... on low costs hosts... (just like I keep my website.. for +-60 dollars / year) Thanks Cesar
Hello Cesar, a while back I posted this: http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/aspnet/35675866/interesting-monitoring-of-cloud-computing.aspx We did some tests and evaluation, but times they are changing. Amazon charges some fee sine June 1st, 2010 for traffic to and from the cloud node. Taking this into account my average customers (they all run rather huge infrastructure) are cheaper off by around 40% if they do inhouse clouding. SW licence fees are like 60-70% of total cost, so this does not change much by putting something else than public domain software into a public cloud. Big O has some figures on this, as does amazon and you can compare the prices with and w/o Big O licenses. In the press IBM centers around the IDS developer edition in the cloud --> it is all about developing in the cloud. I personally must miss something, but when developing I do not see the need to deploy and scale up & down every 5 minutes to safe money ... But then I think I may be just too old or maybe have seen to many I-net access providers fail to trust things, which one cannot control. In Europe there is also a certain unwillingness to belive that nothing ever is copied w/o cloud providers even knowing that this happens. Google for the findings of Chaos Computer Club (CCC, Hamburg, .de) and their findings about stealing data from neighbour nodes in the clouds. IBM also has a cloud offer for developing, so you can find Spookeys article about this. There you can install whatever you have the license for, which is always a good thing (like complex MACH11 setups and things which have the need for many nodes at least if you want to demo the functionality). Maybe it is also a good idea for you to investigate offerings of root access providers, SaaS providers and App Service Providers. If you do not need to quickly add another 200 nodes, most of those providers are more flexible and cheaper at the same time. Flexible here means, that you can install & use what YOU need and not only what is offered by the provider. dic_k Cesar Inacio Martins schrieb: > Hi, > > I just sign to Amazon EC2 to check how works the instances with Informix...and for my surprise I found only two images, with Informix Express and Informix Workgroup... > I'm still little lost on the amazon site... for me all that is to much confusing... > > So, anyone already use this services? > Already used with Innovator-C ? I actually attended a cloud presentation at IDUG this week and here is the reasoning that was given to concentrate on development and test. I paraphrase: "The utilization of development and test system sis typically in the low-single digits." Looking at the Linux box where I do development on that is certainly true even with recycling of the boxes as test servers. Interestingly the vast amount of test I do need minimal resources (near empty databases). So the idea of loading up a server in the cloud with a development image to write and run my tests on seems quite reasonable. Not that both EC2 and the IBM clouds support "virtual private clouds" where you need VPN to connect. Hi Richard, Thanks for your message, but if I understand right your answer we are talking about differ objectives here... Probably I don't be clear enough before. Let's me try explain better. What I want is : Discover a way to build a single site (eg. like a blog) with Drupal + Informix Innovator-C. I want a "popular" and "easy" way to deploy a blog/little site with Informix Innovator-C keeping low cost, where anyone here could make your own blog using Informix as your database . Today , I can do this only if I pay for a full host , where I will have 100% control of the Linux, this isn't very expensive for a company , but for a regular people is. So, configure Drupal over a low cost host (what use linux, shared hosts) isn't impossible. The problem is the PDO, what for some hosts I think this is possible to install. Other and BIGGER problem is run a Informix Innovator-C . Where I can run it? The unique place what I think is possible, keeping the low cost is a micro-instance or a small-instance on Amazon EC2 or other cloud service. And I still have doubts, can I install and run a Informix Innovator-C into a Linux micro/small-instance on the Amazon EC2 ? As far I know, the license of Innovator-C don't talk anything about this... so I deduce, yes I can. But, I idon't know if the Amazon and IBM allow this. I'm don't ask for them yet...I want to know if somebody here already try do this... If have someone of IBM , responsible for the Informix license, I appreciate your words.
