Re: Senior Oracle DBA now Learning Informix by Request
Posted in 2006
Despite the subject line, this stretch of the thread contains no technical content or support question. It is an off-topic, often jokey argument between IBM and Oracle partisans about financial disclosure: whether IBM breaks out Informix (IDS) revenue versus whether Oracle breaks out core database revenue, with links to earnings coverage and Oracle's new 'a la carte' pricing, plus jabs about marketing claims (e.g., first database on Linux). No problem is posed and no resolution is recorded.

Mark Townsend wrote: > I'm not sure I am following this anymore - what revenue numbers do we > need to break out and why ? *lol*This tread has gotten a bit confusing, eh? Let me summarize: 1. You: IBM doesn't break out IDS revenue! 2. I: Oracle doesn't break out detail revenue either, so what's your point? I wonder what Oracle DBMS revenues were this quarter. Let's start substracting Siebel Analytics; Middlewhere grows faster than the rest, carry over a one, .... ahhh We are playing just the same games at reverse engineering Oracle revenue numbers as you do with us. Level playing field. The difference is that IBM isn't complaining. So either stop complaining or lead by example (that's the part that got Daniel all confused) to gain at least moral high ground. 2007 is going to be an awesome year for IT spending...I can smell it in the air... That link you gave proves that good marketing does wonders for the bottom line, and coincidentally, that IT in the US is at full throttle... I love it! I don't see any broken out numbers. In the universe occupied by most here analysts reverse engineer (!) that Oracle's core DBMS revenue has actually been flat or declining. So, on one side we have IBM failing to break out a fraction of DBMS revenue. On the other side we have Oracle failing to break out DBMS revenues period. - Arguable 80% of it's friggin' business and hide its problems behind e.g. Siebel Analytics. Wow. Codernauts... you'd have to stay aware from infringement... O them... Odornauts.... Maybe inversely, IBM could steal marketing ideas from somebody else--nobody would be paying attention anyway, and by using the competition's ideas could actually duplicate or surpass what their competition is doing. Theoretically it could work. For example, Oracle just went ahead and said they were the first major DB on Linux, which was and is total shyte. But they just plowed ahead saying that and nobody noticed or cared. Oracle is successful, it couldn't hurt to imitate them occasionally... I mean the money, it would really be good for Informix if there were the same ideas used to promote it as what Oracle does, using Oracle marketing techniques.
