Re: Informix doesn't start after reboot
Posted in 2005
A user running IDS 9.30.UC2 found oninit wouldn't start after upgrading from a 2.4 to a 2.6 Linux kernel, questioning whether its libpthread.so.0 dependency (not the i686/TLS version) was the cause; on Fedora Core 3 it failed with a relocation error about _h_errno/GLIBC_2.0, and installing compat-glibc didn't help. Jonathan Leffler advised using an IDS build matched to the 2.6 kernel, or, since the poster insisted he was locked into that IDS version, reverting to the previously working kernel/glibc combination. No actual fix for running 9.30.UC2 on the newer kernel is recorded.

That's my libraries dependencies for oninit:
ldd /opt/informix/bin/oninit
iosm09a.so => /usr/lib/iosm09a.so (0x4001b000)
libpthread.so.0 => /lib/libpthread.so.0 (0x4001d000)
ismdd09a.so => /usr/lib/ismdd09a.so (0x4006e000)
libm.so.6 => /lib/libm.so.6 (0x40070000)
libdl.so.2 => /lib/libdl.so.2 (0x40093000)
libcrypt.so.1 => /lib/libcrypt.so.1 (0x40096000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x400c3000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x40000000)
libpthread.so.0 is not under i686 or tls: does it matter? If yes, what
can I do?
I'm upgrading the kernel from 2.4.27-2-686 to 2.6.8-2-686.
Thanks for the help!

If Martin Fuerderer or Sandor Szabo responds, pay attention to what he
says over what I say.
Which version of IDS are you currently using?
Is the ldd command and output above for the 2.4 or 2.6 kernel?
If the output is for the 2.4 kernel and your observation is that the
thread library is not available for 2.6, then you have a problem.
If the output is for the 2.6 kernel, you may be OK.
However, I would strongly counsel obtaining a version of IDS built for
the 2.6 kernel - and reading the release notes for it very carefully.
You may be able to get away with running a version of IDS built for the
2.4 kernel on the 2.6 kernel, but if there are any issues (like it can't
find a key library and you can't find out how to install that library in
a compatibility mode), then it is better to upgrade.

I'm using IDS_9.30.UC2.
I've just upgraded to kernel 2.6.8 and I've got the same output.
The problem is that I need to use this version, so I can't upgrade IDS!
:-(
I've also tried to install IDS on a Fedora Core 3 system, but I've got
this error message when I try to launch oninit:
oninit: relocation error: /var/lib/libpthread.so.0: symbol _h_errno,
version GLIBC_2.0 not defined in file libc.so.6 with link time
reference
I've installed compat-glibc-6.2-2.1.3.2.i386, but it seems that oninit
can't find the compability libraries.

You can afford to upgrade your kernel so that your database breaks, but
you can't afford to upgrade your DBMS so it doesn't break?
Sounds cockeyed to me...

Please consider reverting to the known working combination of Linux (kernel + glibc) with the known working but unchangeable version of IDS. If you can't change the version of IDS to one that will work with your new version of Linux, please don't use the new version of Linux. Whatever it is that forces you to use *THIS* version of IDS (9.30.UC2) cannot also be forcing you to upgrade Linux. -- Jonathan Leffler #include <disclaimer.h> Email: jleffler@earthlink.net, jleffler@us.ibm.com Guardian of DBD::Informix v2005.02 -- http://dbi.perl.org/
