INPUT ARRAY Erasing Lines

I am having a problem with erased lines when using an INPUT ARRAY. The screen is a header/detail format. When the header section is active a message indicating the number of documents selcted is displayed on line 23 which looks something like: (1 of 23) The problem is that when the detail section becomes active, the INPUT ARRAY statement seems to be erasing line 23, even though the detail screen fields end at line 20. Only one field (tag X) is used for input and has the attribute: comments=""; What I have had to do as a work-around is to create two screen fields on lines 21 and 22. Line 21 provides summary info and line 22 displays the current element e.g. (4 of 230). The screen looks like the following (truncated on right, line numbers, colon and space added on left for readability): 16: [X|A6 |A7 |A8 |A9 |B1 |B2 |Z|B3 ... 17: [X|A6 |A7 |A8 |A9 |B1 |B2 |Z|B3 ... 18: [X|A6 |A7 |A8 |A9 |B1 |B2 |Z|B3 ... 19: [X|A6 |A7 |A8 |A9 |B1 |B2 |Z|B3 ... 20: [X|A6 |A7 |A8 |A9 |B1 |B2 |Z|B3 ... 21: [ST ... 22: [ST2 ... 23: I can display a message there and it stays through all the AFTER .. and BEFORE ... logic. Only upon returning to the INPUT ARRAY does it become erased. Does anyone know why this is happening?
